The Joys of Reading. By Nanjala Mola

Nanjala is an AS level English student at THE KEEP. She started her High School career at THE KEEP in Grade 8 in 2016.

An interesting fact is that Nanjala's Primary School English teacher is one of our students who finished her High School career at THE KEEP many moons ago.

THE JOYS OF READING

When the rain decides to fall gently, while thumping against your window sill, you will naturally find yourself trapped in the comfy confines of your warm blankets with a book in your hands. This is one of the pure joys of reading.

By definition reading is a mere action but by practice it is a soul enriching ritual that will engulf your entire being. Reading is more than just an action. It is a companion on lonely days, a saviour that cures ignorance and a device that fixes broken hearts. Reading is a super power that blesses both the saviour and the victim.

Reading is a luxurious activity created for those with beautiful souls. That sure does sound like you, doesn't it? Why are you still contemplating reading? Drop what you are doing now and indulge in a  thick novel that will certainly shake hands with your soul.

Reading also indicates intelligence. Are you lacking a bit in that department or do people undermine your intelligence daily? Reading is the solution to your problems. Reading expands one's vocabulary and nourishes the brain with new ideas and a bright imagination which should lead to you eventually being more intelligent than you would have been had you not read. You'll also be able to pull the trigger of your tongue and shoot out complex words that will leave others dazed for days.

Reading is a skill that we all have and that we all take for granted. We all seem to forget how much time and effort it took to learn how to read. We seem to forget the times we would break up the word with little claps to be able to read it. We seem to forget that reading is a skill we have yet to fully master. Reading, like other skills, needs to be polished and practiced every once in a while to stay fresh or it will eventually deteriorate.

You have not tasted joy until you have reached the last sentence of the last page of any thick book. Reading the last page feels like tasting a slice of heaven while floating on cloud nine and sipping on four leaf clover juice. It is the best feeling in the world.

Reading does not exclusively exist for old people who have to do something with their eyes before they decide to close permanently. Reading exists for all who decide to invite it into their lives with open arms and hearts.

Grab an interesting book, open it and read it from page to page and gain your own testimony on the joys of reading which you fully deserve. The joys of reading are so great that it would be a shame if you had to go through life without experiencing it.

Reading is not just a hobby, or a habit. It is a skill that (if sharpened) could pierce through the coldest hearts, the hardest of heads and the thickest walls of ignorance. Medicine heals the body but we all need to piece back our souls and the best way to do that, is to read. Read books that relate to you. Reading is the best thing in the world so pick up a book and read!
